The kids are back in school. Vacations are over. The holidays have ended. January is a time to settle into a schedule and get life back on track. Many of us even strive to improve a thing or two in hopes of a happier, healthier new year. Unfortunately, influenza is on the rise and it is projected to be a record year. According to the CDC, for the week of December 30 thru January 5th, influenza activity remained elevated. Unfortunately, since September 30, 2012, there have been 20 reported pediatric deaths, 4 of those being in Colorado. In addition, there have been almost 700 hospitalizations in Colorado. The peak usually arrives in late January and February, which means there is an especially urgent need to arm yourself and your family. Influenza is an especially dangerous condition for the elderly, the very young, and those of you with asthma.

IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN VACCINATED, YOU SHOULD DO SO NOW!!!!

Getting vaccinated is the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. It is not too late, as long as influenza viruses are circulating.

According to the CDC you can also help stop the spread of influenza and other diseases by doing the following things:

  • If you get sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
  • Practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette to prevent the spread of germs. This means, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue; or cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
  • Wash your hands regularly.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.
  • While not a substitute for vaccination, these steps can help prevent the spread of influenza. Maintain a good routine with all your medications to keep your lungs as healthy as possible including, regular nasal washes. Studies have shown, patients who do them twice a day, have 50-80% less illnesses in a year.

Finally, if you do develop flu-like symptoms call us as soon as possible. Antiviral drugs are available that can make your illness milder and help you feel better faster.

We are always happy to answer any questions you have.
