We all live busy lives, and this time of year seems to be extra crazy. Food and fun is everywhere but to a person with food allergies it can be an added stress. Anaphylaxis is a real and serious threat. The CDC reported that food allergies result in more than 300,000 ambulatory-care visits a year among children under the age of 18. Here are a few tips we found to help you have a happy and safe holiday.
- Turkey may seem safe, but self-basting turkeys can include soy, wheat, and dairy. Natural turkeys are a good alternative since by law it must only contain turkey and water.
- Use chicken broth and margarine in your mashed potatoes to keep them dairy free.
- Corn starch can thicken gravy instead of wheat flour.
- Beware of fancy vegetable and fruit sides. Nuts are often a hidden ingredient.
- Last but not least DESSERT. It may be best to just bring your own. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
Careful planning and a few precautions are well worth the effort. Remember to always have your epi-pen close by. A good rule to keep in mind is if two systems are involved, even if you feel your breathing is stable for the moment, don’t hesitate to use it right away. If a reaction occurs, have someone take you to the Emergency Department, even if symptoms subside.
Anaphylaxis Symptoms:
- Mouth – itching, swelling of lip and/or tongue
- Throat- itching, tightness, closure or difficulty swallowing, hoarsness
