The old stereotype of the wimpy allergic asthmatic, who can’t get off the couch, does not have to be true of your child. An estimated 300 million people worldwide suffer from asthma, and unfortunately strenuous exercise can make symptoms worse. But experts agree exercise is healthy. By taking a few precautions and finding the right treatment for your allergies and asthma, your child can be symptom free and lead an active, normal life!
It’s exciting to know, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, asthma and Exercise- induced asthma symptoms affects an estimated 20% of athletes and an estimated 1 in 6 of all Olympic athletes. It hasn’t stopped them and it doesn’t have to stop your child.
Here are few tips to keep in mind:
See your allergy and asthma specialist! Limitations with exercise can be eliminated by having the right daily routine in place. You know what they say; the best defense is a good offense. Just pre-treating with albuterol is not an answer. This indicates uncontrolled, persistent asthma that can cause problems and lung damage.
Educate! Give the coach a heads up to any allergies that may trigger an attack. It’s also a good idea to have your child take charge of their health as well. All should be aware of what to do in an emergency. We will be happy to work with you to come up with a plan.
First-aid gets first place! Always have your rescue inhaler readily available and remind your child there is no shame in using it. Olympic athletes do it and so should they. Just remember to discuss this with your doctor if they need it regularly. This could indicate their asthma is not under control. Also, stock up on latex free band-aids, antihistamines to treat minor allergic reactions, and plenty of water is a must.
Snack wisely! Good nutrition keeps them going, but for a child with a life-threatening food allergy it can stop them in their tracks. If there is a snacking schedule, make sure all volunteers are well informed on your child’s allergies. Last but not least, always, always, always have your epi-pen close by.
Stop allergies before they stop you! Take your allergy medicines before the game, especially if sports are played on the field. When you’re done wash pollens off by showering right away and remember nasal washes. They are your friend.
One definition of asthma is reversible airway disease. That means there is hope, it does not have to stop your child’s dreams. Let us help you be symptom free!!!!
