I was the allergic child growing up. I had it all-asthma, allergies, and eczema. Prior to being diagnosed and properly treated, my symptoms severely limited the quality of my life. I couldn’t go to friends’ houses with pets, or field trips to the zoo. They even had to get rid of our classroom pet rabbit because of me, which is traumatic for a third grader! I also felt the effects of my asthma during play and would often have to sit out of activities due to shortness of breath. It wasn’t until I was in sixth grade and a trip to the emergency room due to breathing that my symptoms were diagnosed and treated. I flourished after being put on the right combination of medicine and staring shots for my allergies. In high school, I participated in water polo, swimming, and cross country. I have continued to be very active and have run several races including multiple half-marathons and my first full marathon recently.
My own experiences motivated me to go into the field of Allergy/Immunology. I think it is so important for people to realize that they don’t have to be limited by their disease. If they want to be an Olympic athlete, they can! As long as you are willing to work with your doctors, then tremendous results can be achieved.
